Building Dreams

CCBers explored career options with elementary school students through Lead to Read’s “Done in a Day” VTO.

CCB associates helped build some dreams on October 20 as they gathered at Faxon Elementary School to read “Someone Builds the Dream,” by Lisa Wheeler, to fourth-grade students.

Each volunteer was partnered with a student for a one-hour experience in which students explored careers featured in the story. Each student received a copy of the book to take home, courtesy of Country Club Bank.

Fewer than half of Kansas City third-graders are reading on grade level. In many high-need schools, the percentage is below 25 percent. Further, children who are not reading by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

Lead to Read KC addresses the challenge by pairing reading mentors with students to improve the social, emotional and reading skills for students’ success.

Thank you to all the CCBers who participated in the Lead To Read KC program and spending time to make a difference in the community we love.
